Exfoliating Before a Spray Tan: The Right Way
If you only do one prep step, make it this one. Exfoliating removes the dead skin cells that would otherwise grab too much solution — or shed days later and take your color with them.

How to exfoliate for a spray tan
- Exfoliate thoroughly before your session — ideally the day before.
- Pay special attention to elbows, knees, and ankles, where skin is driest and color grabs hardest.
- Use an exfoliating mitt, dry brush, or a scrub without oils.
- Follow with a light moisturizer on the days before your appointment — then stop moisturizing the day of your tan.
Mistakes that cause patchy color
- Skipping rough spots — knees, elbows, ankles, and the backs of arms are the usual suspects.
- Using oil-based scrubs right before your session — the residue blocks the solution.
- Over-scrubbing until skin is raw or irritated; firm and thorough beats aggressive.
Removing an old tan first?
If you still have color from a previous tan, removing it fully matters even more. A warm bath followed by a thorough exfoliating-mitt session lifts leftover color so your new tan starts on a clean slate.
Common questions
Should I exfoliate the day of my spray tan?
The day before is ideal. If you exfoliate the same day, do it several hours ahead and arrive with completely dry, product-free skin.
What if I don't exfoliate at all?
The tan will still develop, but dry areas like elbows, knees, and ankles tend to grab extra color and fade patchily. Exfoliating is what makes the finish even.
