How to Prepare for a Spray Tan

A great spray tan is half artistry, half preparation. The solution develops in the top layer of your skin, so the condition of that layer decides how even your color looks and how long it holds. Here is the prep routine the studio walks every client through.

How to Prepare for a Spray Tan

The days before your appointment

  • Exfoliate thoroughly to remove dead skin cells, paying special attention to elbows, knees, and ankles — these areas grab extra color.
  • Shave or wax at least 24 hours before your appointment to prevent irritation and ensure smooth application.
  • Keep skin hydrated in the days leading up, then stop moisturizing the day of your tan.

The day of your tan

  • Skip moisturizers, deodorants, and perfumes — they create barriers between your skin and the tanning solution.
  • Arrive with clean, product-free skin.
  • Bring or wear loose, dark clothing for after your session to prevent streaking or fabric transfer.

Why prep matters so much

Tanning solution reacts with the outermost skin cells. If those cells are dry, flaky, or coated in product, the color grabs unevenly and fades in patches. Smooth, clean, product-free skin is the single biggest factor in a flawless result — even before the technician picks up the spray gun.

Common questions

How far in advance should I start prepping?

Shave or wax at least 24 hours ahead and exfoliate before your session. On the day itself, simply arrive with clean, product-free skin.

Can I moisturize the morning of my tan?

Skip it — moisturizers, deodorants, and perfumes create barriers to the solution. Moisturize in the days before, not the day of.
