Fixing Spray Tan Mistakes
Even a great tan can hit a snag — a rain drop on the walk to the car, forgotten moisturizer on one elbow. Most mishaps are fixable at home with things you already own. Here's the repair manual.

Fresh mistakes (before the first rinse)
- Water spots or streaks while developing: blend immediately with a dry makeup sponge or mitt using gentle dabs — don't rub.
- Too-dark palms or nails: wash them — hands are the one place you can rinse early.
- Smudges from tight clothing: leave them; many even out during development.
Settled mistakes (after the rinse)
- Too dark overall: take a warm bath or long shower and gently exfoliate — color lifts a level or two.
- Dark patches on elbows/knees: dab with a lemon juice and baking soda paste, wait a few minutes, rinse, moisturize.
- Streaks: buff gently with a damp washcloth in circles, then moisturize the area well.
- Patchy fade: exfoliate the whole body evenly and let it reset — spot-scrubbing makes patchiness worse.
Prevention beats repair
- Exfoliate and moisturize in the days before your appointment.
- Follow your rinse timing exactly.
- Daily moisturizer is the single best patchiness insurance.
- When in doubt, contact the studio — a specialist can tell you whether to fix or wait.
Common questions
How do I remove a spray tan completely?
Warm baths, gentle exfoliation, and a few days — or let it fade naturally within a week or so. Avoid harsh removers that irritate skin.
My hands are way too dark — help?
Exfoliate hands with a scrub or a lemon-baking-soda paste, then moisturize heavily. Hands fade fastest naturally, so this resolves within days.
