Understanding Skin Undertones (and Why They Matter for Your Tan)
Two people can use the exact same tanning formula and walk out with completely different results. The reason is undertone — the permanent temperature of your skin — and it's the first thing a good technician reads.
The three undertones
- Warm: golden, peachy, or yellow notes — skin tans easily and suits golden-brown depths.
- Cool: pink, red, or bluish notes — needs carefully matched depth to stay golden rather than orange.
- Neutral: a balance of both — the most flexible, happy across a wide depth range.
Quick ways to read yours
- Vein check: greenish veins suggest warm; bluish suggests cool; hard to tell suggests neutral.
- Jewelry check: gold flatters warm tones; silver flatters cool.
- Sun check: burns first then tans suggests cool; tans readily suggests warm.
- None of these are medical tests — just helpful clues your technician confirms in person.

Color matching starts with your undertone, then layers in your depth goal and the occasion. That's the difference between a tan that looks like your skin on its best vacation day and one that looks borrowed.
Common questions
Can my undertone change?
No — undertone is constant. Surface tone (how pale or tanned you are right now) changes; undertone doesn't.
Do I need to know my undertone before booking?
Not at all — reading it is your technician's job. Just bring your goal ('natural glow', 'deep bronze') and they'll handle the match.
