Swimming After a Spray Tan: Pools, Ocean & Hot Tubs
A spray tan before a beach trip sounds contradictory — won't the water ruin it? Not if you time it right and treat it right. Swimming doesn't remove a developed tan instantly, but it does speed up the fade, and chlorine is the main culprit.
The swimming rules
- No swimming until after your first rinse — water during development can streak color.
- Chlorine is the fastest fader: keep pool dips shorter and rinse off right after.
- Salt water is gentler than chlorine but still drying — rinse and moisturize after ocean swims.
- Hot tubs combine heat, chemicals, and soaking — the toughest environment for a tan.
Protecting your tan around water
- Rinse off fresh water immediately after swimming.
- Pat dry — never rub with a towel.
- Moisturize after every swim day; sun and water both dry skin out.
- Apply (and reapply) sunscreen — a spray tan contains no sun protection.
Timing a tan before a trip

No — a spray tan is cosmetic color only. You still need sunscreen outdoors.
Will one swim ruin my tan?
